Water & The Gospel
The Bible speaks of both physical water necessary for life here on earth, and living water necessary for eternal life. One is for temporary relief, the other for eternal satisfaction. Jesus said in the Gospel of John, "Everyone who drinks this water (physical water) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Itʼs clear to see the importance of water in Biblical times. People thirsted, wells were dug or rocks struck, people were supplied and satisfied. Even on a recent trip into north India we were struck with how much these villages resembled what must have been small towns in biblical times.
Throughout scripture water is used in reference to spiritual and physical realities. One of the strongest references is from Jesus Himself found in the book of John.
Jesus says in John 7:37-38, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him"
Did you catch that? What an incredible invitation, especially in this context. Itʼs hard to put ourselves in their shoes because we donʼt really know what itʼs like to be thirsty. They lived in a land where the women collected water from the wells each day for drinking, cleaning, bathing and watering their livestock and still probably did not use more than 10 to 20 gallons per day (Genesis 24:15-19, Exodus 2:16-17, 1 Samuel 9:11, John 4).
Essentially, Jesus is saying "If you thirst and you come to Me, you will never thirst again. In fact, you will become a source for refreshing - you will have an eternal well inside of you. You will never go thirsty again." People who know what it is to be thirsty physically, can better grasp the importance of this passage. They recognize their need. Theyʼve thirsted that day and theyʼll do it again tomorrow. They have gone to a well that used to provide them with water only to find it dried up and useless. According to Christ, come to Him and this will never happen.

This is why providing clean water to these villages gives our church partners incredible opportunity to do exactly what Christ did - invite the thirsty to never thirst again. It doesnʼt mean that everyone accepts the invitation - but it does mean the entire community hears the gospel, sees a practical demonstration of the gospel and has an opportunity to respond to the invitation. At the end of the day, we pray that God uses Neverthirst to water the seeds already planted by the local church and at the same time alleviate the suffering of millions.
